Copabella Starting Up Services

2nd December 2010

It is not common knowledge, but Copabella offers a starting service for outside clients' young horses as well as our own.

Phill Dodd has been starting young horses here for the past five years, beginning with Conspiring who is now rising-8 years old and a successful dressage horse. He spent three months in Japan starting horses in 2009, and was invited to return this year but declined due to other commitments. He is an accomplished horseman with a calm, confidence-building manner which quickly builds trust. Phill has started or re-started every horse he has worked with successfully, ranging from young warmblood colts to Thoroughbreds off the track.

Our approach incorporates Join-Up methods, which are always kind and non-threatening. Horses are handled extensively in the lead-up to being backed, and when they leave Copabella they walk, trot and canter calmly under saddle, load and unload from floats, tie up and stand quietly for hosing, grooming, tacking up, farrier etc. We do not long-line, preferring to work with horses bareback initially and then under saddle after teaching them basic pressure-release aids on the ground to begin with. They understand leg and seat aids and have soft accepting mouths.

The process usually takes about 6 weeks, depending on the individual's needs, and can include a few outings to jump club or similar just for the experience of getting out in public. Horses do road walks in company with more experienced horses, as well as roundyard, arena and hill work.

For more information call Lesley on 02 9653 1993 or 0417 663 027, or e-mail lesley@copabella.com Go also to the Gallery to find extensive pictorial coverage of Phill at work in the Starting Up file.
